During World War 11 Eric and many people who lived and worked in China were put into crowded prisoner of war camps.

For Eric death came just months before the war finished.
He was buried in the little cemetery in the Japanese part of the camp where others who had died during their imprisonment had been placed.
David remembers being part of the guard of honour made up of children from the Chefoo and Weihsien Schools.

We had been in the camp two years and the day before he died I saw Eric walk slowly under the trees where he had taught us children to play rounders and basketball.
As usual, he had a smile for everyone, especially for us children.
We knew nothing of the pain he was hiding, and he knew nothing of the brain tumour that was to take his life the next evening on February 14, 1945. He was 43.

It was twenty one years after he had won the gold medal and created a world record in the 400 metres that he reached the tape of his final race on earth.

In the camp the girls and boys taken from school lived with their teachers.
They knew that Eric was a very special teacher.
He was kind to old and young, especially to a sick lady who had to stay in the camp morgue because there was no other space.

In the camp were boys who did special work for God when they grew up
There was Jim, great-grandson of Hudson Taylor a famous
Missionary, Steve and David who wrote this information down.
Steve later worked in Japan with the Overseas Missionary Fellowship.

Steve’s most special memory is of Eric’s gift of his running shoes just three weeks before he died.
Though tied together with string and patched with tape, those shoes were a priceless possession.
