Bible Lesson - Pride

I don't like to tell you his name but he had bad trouble.
He was the best player on the school team but no one liked him.

The problem was that he knew he was the best and kept telling everyone all the time.
The girls didn’t like him either because he was so proud and ‘stuck up.’ He would say, “I’m the best. Get out of my way

This proud boy thought everyone was jealous of him.
I suppose he never knew that he was his own problem.
The Bible says God can’t help proud people.
Their hearts are hard.
Proverbs 16:5 says, “Everyone who is proud is disgusting to the Lord.”
Pride separates people from God.

The picture is not of the proud boy but you can read more on the Kids Pages.

He Won by Quoting the Bible

The Bible tells us about Satan’s trick question to get Jesus to do something bad. Matthew 4:1-4 The Message It says:

Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the Test.
The Devil was ready to give it. Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights. That left him, of course in a state of extreme hunger, which the Devil took advantage of in the first test: “Since you are God’s Son, speak the word that will turn these stones into bread.”

But Jesus answered by quoting the Bible. Deuteronomy 8:3
He said,“ It takes more than bread to stay alive (meaning).
It takes a steady stream of words from God’s mouth.”
that we let into our mind and life.

Satan couldn’t change Jesus’ mind, so he left. Jesus won!

A Religious Education Experience

A retired school teacher told this story
to the writer of this page.

Jennifer was an outgoing happy girl, helpful at home, friendly at school. Everybody liked her.
One day she was riding her bike to the shop for her mother
when she fell and cut her hand.
Three days later Jennifer was in hospital with tetanus.
The doctors said she was seriously ill.
She couldn’t move or speak. Jennifer was very sick.
Her school friends wanted to help, but they were not allowed to visit her.
She was much too sick.

The school teacher suggested that all the class pray for her
at 8 o’clock that night.
That night at three minutes to eight o’clock Jennifer died.
Her school friends didn’t know
so they waited for the eight o’clock time
and prayed for their friend.

At the hospital at that time exactly
......... everyone was shocked
Jennifer was alive again!
The doctor couldn’t explain it.
To day Jennifer is quite well and grown up but her small finger is still bent.
It reminds her of the power of prayer
from her caring school friends.

Bible Lesson -God's Help

Tim and Amy were going to put their canoe into the water so they agreed to pull hard together to drag it acros the sand.

It was such hard work that it seemed almost impossible.

But finally the canoe was in the water. Then it floated. Bobbing gently on the water by itself so easily

Our life can abe like that. The Holy Spirit make hard things easier for us.

A Child's Story with a Big Meaning

Whether the need is Prayer, Bible study, Sunday School or Religious Education in Schools this truth applies. It was told a long time ago in Paul White's Jungle Doctor stories.

If you hang porridge in a cloth around your neck it will not stop you being hungry. You have to get the food inside you to stop feeling hungry.

Some people leave the Bible sitting on their table but it doesn’t help them.
Like food you have to get God’s word inside you—in your mind and heart.
God’s word is food for our spirit.

The Bible reference is Matthew 4:3-4

A Girls' Story

This true experience is an example of God's care suitable for the Sunday School class, Bible study or devotional group.

Melissa was walking through the bush track near her home. She had been visiting Jane but they had talked too long and now it was almost dark. Everything looked very strange without the sunlight in the trees and the bush seemed dark and eerie.

It was so s c a r y ...... Melissa prayed.

Straight away there was a something touching her leg and looking down she saw a friendly dog looking at her. His body felt strong and protective beside her and his warm coat felt soft against Melissa’s leg.
He walked close by her side.
Melissa felt safe.
Suddenly the path ended and there ahead was her own back gate. Just then the gentle dog disappeared.

Her family could hardly believe the story but Melissa knew God had sent the friendly dog to comfort her.

A Kids Bible Lesson

Children often express a religious or
Biblically deep thought quite naturally.

I recall my son at the age to commence school said,
"Daddy says, 'Girls first.' My heart says, 'Boys first.'
I'll have to ask Jesus for a new heart, won't I?"

He knew he needed a heart that 'thought' like Jesus.

Bible Advice - You Can Do It

This delightful small verse was shared by Selwyn Hughes - the English Devotional writer and Bible teacher.
He said his father wrote these words in his Bible when he was a child.

Fill the water pots with water
Fill them to the very brim
He will honour all your trusting
Leave the miracle to Him.

Although the verse is referring to Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding feast in Cana (John 2:1-11) you can do it too with your own particular needs. Just put in the effort as 'filling the water pots with water.'

What a Mess!

The more I think of the choice Adam and Eve
made in the Garden of Eden
- the choice of the knowledge of good and evil;
the more I realise what a terrible choice it was.

Now we are surrounded by these two situations forever.
Of course, good is OK but evil.....?
How could we have chosen evil as a 'forever companion.'

No wonder there is the sneaky, mean, unexpected downturn in our days
- even cruelty, sickness and death. What a disaster!

I have just noticed the scripture from James 4:17

"To him who knows to do good and does not do it,.... to him it is sin."
Adam and Eve knew their choice was wrong but they did it anyway.
That was the first sin. What a mess!
Let's grab hold of Jesus' lifeline.

Religious Education and the Trinity

Understanding the Trinity
- the "three in One" God is recognising that
Father God, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit are equally God.

Three ways of describing God is like three ways of describing the sun.

God is the main person of the godhead
as the sun is the main light.

Jesus comes from God and is an expression of Him
as the rays of sunlight come from the sun and spread it's light.

The Holy Spirit is God's Spirit life in the world
as the sun's rays warm the the world with the sun's warmth and gives life.

This illustration from the world that we know often helps our understanding - our Religious Education.

"Switched" On

I was talking to a class of state school children and the subject was Prayer.
I was anxious for them to know the experience of real contact with God.
I explained that God is a spirit. If we believe in Jesus His Spirit will touch our spirit.

It is rather like two batteries in a torch when they're connected in the right way the power flows through them and the light come on.

Our spirit inside us is like a battery.
When God's Spirit touches our spirit we come alive with His energy!
The children's faces lit up with delight as they realised God's Spirit shining His light into their lives.
Invite Jesus to be in charge of your life and then His energy will flow. Stay "switched" on.

Bible Lesson - Two Fruits

It is interesting that the fruit mankind chose in the garden of Eden has affected our lives since then.
Evil is continually impacting our good intentions.

However the gift that Jesus offers to combat the original problem also offers fruit.
It is called the 'Fruit of the Spirit.'

The fruits or benefits in our lives of this fruit are
Love..Joy..Peace..
Patience..Kindness..Goodness..Faithfulness..Gentleness..Self Control
Ephesians 5:22-23

How wonderful that God has offered us the opportunity to accept all that we lost

If we respond to these Bible truths our lives will be greatly changed.

Bible Study Choices

The fruit of a tree is meant to nourish the eater.

In the same way the choice of fruit in the Garden of Eden determined the future of the lives of Adam and Eve from that time on. It would nourish or spoil, depending on the nature of the fruit.

They had chosen to live with the knowledge of good and evil experiences.

So of course evil was always going to rear its ugly head to do all the things that Satan is known for - to steal, kill and destroy. John 10:10

To over come this dangerous situation of living in the presence of an influence that is destructive and deadly God had given us the oportunity since the coming of Jesus to choose again.

If we choose His way we are linked afresh to the 'life source' that comes from God. Do it!

A Bible Choice to Life

God gave the first people in the Garden of Eden a choice between the fruit of two trees.
One was the Tree of Life and the other one the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.
Adam and Eve made a bad choice when they followed Satan's advice.
They chose to follow Satan instead of God and that was bad - they had made Satan their god, idol or leader.

But why did God make such a point of disapproving of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil?

The presence of good doesn't equalise the evil.
We may look only on the good parts .......
but God can never live in the presence of evil.
The mixture of good and evil tricks us.
There is always some good in a bad situation but God is not deceived.
Don't you be tricked.

God knew our judgement would be influenced by our feelings and what other people say.
If we choose God's way we will always 'get it exactly right.'

Sunday School Lesson - Redeem

When the children heard the Bible lesson about Jesus' death. They understood that He became the Lamb slain
and therefore 'paid' the punishment for people's sin.

They were sitting on the floor listening to the message with their study pages in front of them.
They studied a 'Join the dots' puzzle and without pencils to mark their paper were able to read the word 'Redeem'.

They quickly understood that Jesus paid the price to "buy us back" - redeemed us.

Devotions: God's Ultimate Goal

A truth suitable for Devotions, Sunday School or Bible Study is the forecast God made immediately Adam and Eve sinned in the garden and spiritually died.

In Genesis 3:15 God states the child of the woman (Jesus) would crush Satan's head and Satan would bruise his heal.

Even though this didn't occur for about 4,000 years Jesus by dying for mankind as the once and for all sacrifice did conquer sin and death. Sin and death was Satan's domain. In that way Satan's headship - control over those who accepted Jesus as Lord and Saviour was lost.

Even though Jesus physically died, he lived again by God's spirit life within him.
This compared to a bite on the heal - no more than a stumble in Jesus 'long term view.'

Plesiosaur [plee-zee-OH-sores}

A boy in year 6 at the state school was fascinated with the idea of the plesiosaur
- a kind of water dwelling dinosaur -referred to in the Bible as leviathon. (Job 41)

The English Bible was printed 1611 before names were given to any dinosaur or plesiosaur - their bones were discovered and named 1841 - 230 years later.

The lesson was teaching that plesiosaur and dinosaur were created in the creation week with people.
